Nikolaev
The development of Nikolaev city began in earnest in 1789 with the building of the shipyard on the Ingul River. The famous military and political leader Prince G.A. Potemkin (Potyomkin) kept a vigilant eye on shipyard construction and after about a year the small site which arose in the Southern Ukraine was called Nikolayev. The city has more than 500 thousand inhabitants, making it the ninth largest city in the Ukraine. Nikolaev’s industrial strength comes from engineering and metal-working, particularly as they apply to local shipbuilding and energy machine building.
